At our school we believe in the Growth Mindset. Rather than explaining it and what it means, I am going to leave it to Charlie, in Year 5. This is why he believes it is important:

GROWTH MINDSET AND FIXED MINDSET

Hi, I’m Charlie and I’m here today to talk to you about Growth and Fixed mindset and the impact it has on our learning, how the word YET can help and why all schools should promote it.

So, fixed mind set is when someone usually says negative words about their work or a challenge, they face. For example: “OMG I CAN’T DO THIS,” “I DON’T UNDERSTAND,” “NOPE, I’M NOT DOING THAT!” or simply “I GIVE UP”. Now let’s talk about the powerful word YET, and how to change the negative sentence “I CAN’T DO IT” to “I CAN’T DO IT YET!

YET is a strong word that some people use to help them understand that nothings impossible.

You may be wandering “How do I know this?” Well, I had a Fixed mindset once but soon after, I had Growth mindset. It all started when I was in school doing Maths and I came across a question that looked like I would not be able to answer. I said aloud, “Nope no no no I’m not doing that” and I eventually gave up. My teacher came to me and asked if I would like some help. I said yes and these are the words she said to me, “It’s not that you can’t do it, it’s just that you can’t do it YET!!!” I said to myself I can do this, and I did. The next day, I had a go at the question, and I wrote my answer and … I got it checked and it was… CORRECT! I thought I could not do it but now I have a Growth mindset.

The impact of a negative fixed mindset can leave children feeling stupid, lonely and sad. Believe me, it is not a nice feeling. I think if all schools taught the importance of growth mindset, it would help so many children who are struggling and feeling like they cannot do things.

For all those out there who do not believe this, although changes to mind set don’t happen straight away, it does work because it has changed me.

I now try my best to help my friends realise that if they are finding things hard, it’s only because they can’t do it YET!!

That is all from me today I’m Charlie and have a great day.
