Welcome to Hercules Class!
Hello and welcome to the Hercules Home Page! We have lots of lovely Year 3 and 4 children in our class this year. Some of the pupils join Voyagers during the mornings and then rejoin us after lunch. The wonderful Mrs Webb, Mrs Williams and Mrs Edmunds (TAs) and Mr Drake (volunteer) support us in class.
I am a firm believer in hard work and putting 100% effort into each and every task. If your child comes home and tells you that 'the work is tricky or difficult,' please don't panic; it is meant to be challenging so that they have the opportunity to build on previous knowledge and develop new skills. I do not give my students work which they can access with ease as this will slow their progress and limit their capabilities. Learning is meant to be a whole of host of things- 'easy' is not one of them.
I am a huge fan of Prof Carol Dweck and her work on teaching children to have 'growth mindsets.' Over the next few weeks, I am hoping you will begin to hear your child say phrases such as, "I can't do it... yet," or "I have made a fantastic mistake which I can learn from." Promoting a growth mindset within the school and home reassures children that it is 'ok' to get things wrong. This in turn will help them to take more risks with their learning and feel less intimated by challenge.
If there is anything you would like to discuss with me about your child's wellbeing or education, my door is always open. Please make an appointment to see me after school so that we can chat in-depth. I look forward to the year ahead and working in close partnership. You are the experts on 'your child' and I would really value your input or any suggestions you may have.

Book Week Dance Workshops
We all had great fun in our dance workshops based on "Where the Wild Things Are" and "The BFG". Thank you very much to the School Association for paying for them!
Mighty oaks from little acorns grow
It has been a pleasure to have Class 3 at Forest School so far this year; to watch them learn, grow in confidence, solve problems together and come up with new ideas from week to week.
Every week, they go off in separate ways, knowing what it is that they want to achieve; whether it is going down to the pond to see if anything has changed, using every bit of rope to create a seat in a tree, building a den with mates, starting small fires or using the tools. The other week, a small group of children decided to make a zip wire; they found the resources they needed, and worked together to make it. However, they decided that it was too loose. This week, they used some different knots and a stronger rope - but there was too much friction for anything to slide along! So much team work, language, communicating and problem solving; I wonder what they'll do next week!!
Year 3 Multi Skills morning
Today (Tuesday 7th February) all of the Year 3 children visited Buford Secondary School to participate in a multi skills activity morning with our partnership primary schools.
Everybody really enjoyed the games and races that were organised and we also caught up with some old friends, current friends from Brownies and made some new friends too.
Well done to everybody who participated with enthusiasm. The Buford PE teacher even singled out one of our children as a model of initiative and helpfulness!
Forest School Fun!
Class 3 loved their first week back out at Forest School. The children that came last year, noticed lots of changes. After doing a tour of the site and talking about how we can keep ourselves safe, the children were able to go off and explore.
Some children chose to use the flint and steel to try and start their own miniature fires in a shell, whilst others chose to use a knife to whittle a stick. There was plenty of 'cooking' in the mud kitchen, with some elaborate meals being planned and made. A small group of boys played with a rope for the whole afternoon...the problem solving and learning that went on was immense as they had to work out how to reach the branch with it, how to tie it, how to make it throw further etc.
It was good to sit around the fire together with a hot dog at the end, and hear about what they would like to do over the rest of the term.
