Key Stage 1 Summer Concert

Soggy Forest School

It was a tad wet on Monday but the children didn't let it stop them having fun.

They loved hammering out patterns to make tin can lanterns and the new trapeze was very popular for swinging around on.  The pond was bustling with life, with tadpoles, frogs and a water louse being spotted and identified by the children.

We came together for quesadillas around the campfire, a song and a game of camouflage.

London!

In geography this term we are learning about the four countries of the United Kingdom.

We have been thinking about our capital city, why it is important, who lives there and some of the famous buildings.  Children have worked in groups to construct models of some of the buildings. Year 1 used the internet to look at aerial views and plot on our map where each of the buildings would be. We all decided London looked very crowded.

Shadow fun

In science we have been thinking about the changing seasons and weather. We have made seasons pictures which are being displayed in our cloakroom so please come and have a look. This week we enjoyed going outside in the sunshine to play shadow tag then draw around our shadows. We talked about how shadows are made and why we don’t have shadows at night, as well as the best time of year to make shadows.

Later on foundation children made shadow puppets whilst Year 1 began their weather record. We will be using wind socks, thermometers and a rain gauge to record the weather all week.

You can help at home by talking about changes in season and the weather, especially how day length varies in the winter and summer.

Nature Inspiration

Today we had some nature inspired activities for the children; they could paint mini beast bug pebbles, create a face using pieces of nature, make leaf animals and thread leaves.  These activities were popular with the children but some prefer to put up dens, go pond dipping, hang out in the hammock swing, light fires and put together appetising mud kitchen meals!

At snack time, the children had campfire rhubarb crumble, using freshly cut rhubarb, whilst listening to the story, Leaf Man.
