Brize Norton Airbase Visit

On Thursday Class 1 all boarded the mini bus and excitedly set off to the air base. To begin we explored a C17 and found out how many elephants could fit inside!  Children were allowed to open and close the rear doors, change the light colour and explore the cockpit. We also found out all about the job of the load master who has to be very good at maths to make sure everything is balanced and secure when the planes fly.

We then watched a video of aircraft flying and parachuting their loads out whilst we ate our snack and coloured some pictures of planes. Next we learnt some more about the work engineers and pilots do and all had a go at flying a plane in the simulator, which was very realistic (and my favourite part of the whole trip).

After this we went to the departure lounge of the airport to have our lunch; from here we could see planes taking off and landing and even saw a chinook carrying a boat. Finally children had a play in the soft play area. At the end we were all tired out.

It really was a fantastic day out where we all learned a lot. A big thank you to Mrs Marshman for arranging the trip and all the staff and crew at the base who helped make the day so amazing.

(The answer is 25 elephants)

Making charcoal

Class 1 came to Forest School and quickly disappeared with their own agendas.  Some children went to the pond area to search for creatures - and they weren't disappointed. At one point, a frog hopped out of the pond and sat with them on the pallets!

Other children came to help with the fire, and were keen to help make some kindling. We started the fire early today as we wanted to heat it up for making baked apples - and to also make some charcoal.  To make the charcoal, the children peeled the bark off some willow, then they cut the willow so that it would fit in the tin and then they watched it in the fire.  When the tin stopped smoking, we took it out and put it to one side to cool.  Once it was ready, we opened it up and had real pieces of charcoal that the children took off to draw and write with!

The children stuffed some apples with marshmallow and raisins and then wrapped them in foil.  After baking them in the fire, the children noticed that the marshmallow had melted.  Some of the children enjoyed their snack so much, that they had seconds...and thirds!

And today we went on a Grufflo hunt

We looked for signs of autumn as well as searching for all the characters from the story and retelling the tale as we went along.

Gruffalo Topic
