Emergency vehicles

Continuing with our topic, People Who Help Us, this week we have been making emergency vehicles and thinking about which emergency services and vehicles might come to different incidents. Children have also been thinking about 999 calls, with some choosing to practice these in their role play.

Our models are on display in the classroom, please come in and have a look.

People Who Help Us

We have had great fun playing in our new Doctors Surgery role-play corner. The children have imagined all kinds of interesting injuries and have decided together whether an ambulance has needed to be called. Some of us have practiced tying slings whilst others have examined x-rays as the waiting room has started to fill up.

We also practiced calling 999 on a pretend phone and asking for the correct emergency service to fit the incident.  Finally, we listened to a real 999 call made by an 8 year old boy and discussed whether we would be able to answer the questions he was asked sensibly and carefully too.

Today we decorated biscuits following two-step instructions such as 'Put the sprinkles on top of your biscuit and the strawberry laces at the bottom of your biscuit.'

The children really enjoyed this activity and there were lots of sticky fingers (some 'accidentally' licked!). We enjoyed eating our creations at snack time!

People Who Help Us: Nurses

Today Anita, from the school nurse team, came to talk to us about how she helps keep people healthy and how we can help ourselves. We thought about how germs can  spread around our classroom to make us unwell. Anita brought her magic light box that showed the children if they were washing their hands properly.

We also learned about the flu vaccine that will be offered to children next week. Anita explained this will feel like a tickle and help protect us from being poorly in the winter.

Today we made strawberry and orange jellies with fruit at the bottom. We talked about how our jellies were changing states throughout the day from 'watery' to 'wibbly wobbly' and finally to 'firm'. We enjoyed eating them during snack time.
