Welcome to Voyager Class!

This is the Year 5 and 6 Class, though in the mornings it is split - the Year 6 children become Falcons and are taught separately, while the Year 5s are joined by some children from Year 4. In the mornings, Years 4 and 5 are taught by Mrs Rae and Miss Kerr (teachers) and by Miss Kearvell, Mrs Deegen and Mrs Williams (teaching assistants) while Year 6 are taught by Miss Burn (teacher) and by Mrs Bostock and Mrs Deegan (teaching assistants. In the afternoon, Year 5 and 6 are taught by Miss Kerr and Miss Burn.

It has been a pleasure to welcome your child to Voyager Class; they have come back after the summer break, ready and eager to learn.  We are very much looking forward to spending the rest of the year with them.

To help you to support your child, we feel it is important that you understand our routine; every morning, we dedicate our time to Spelling, Maths and Literacy, and our afternoon timetable is currently as follows:

Tuesday - PE (Tudor dance) and RE (Islam/Muhammad)

Wednesday - Science (Forces and Magnets) or Topic

Hockey

As well as going swimming this term, the children are playing hockey in their PE lessons. Their competitive side made an appearance on Tuesday as they played for points in mini games - note the professional kit as well!

Crime and Punishment

As part of our Crime and Punishment topic, the children spent the afternoon sketching various medieval punishments, such as the guillotine and stocks! They focused really hard on their shading and the pictures will be added to our (currently very plain-looking!) classroom display.

Year 6 Parent Information

Please find attached a copy of the Year 6 parent letter with information regarding homework, including reading records, and PE.

Spelling Heaven!

Homework

We would like the children to focus on learning their weekly spellings (tested on Monday mornings) and their times tables (tested on Wednesday morning). Children receive their new weekly spellings on Tuesdays and their maths homework on Wednesdays. We are sure that you are aware that the age-related expectations for your children have increased significantly and that we need to prepare them as well as we can for their future learning. This requires the children to have an instant recall of multiplication and division facts to 12x12. When the children have passed all of their times tables tests then they will receive different maths homework in which they will consolidate the weekly learning. Year 6 children will receive supplementary homework. Occasionally, another piece of homework may be sent home. This might be related to one of our school events, for example our Harvest Festival.

Please support your children to complete their homework. They should also be reading for at least twenty minutes, five times a week. Year 4 and 5 children are expected to write the date, title of their book and number of pages read. This helps us to guide your children's choice of reading material. Year 6 children should be writing about what they have read, guided by comments made by a teacher.

We thank you for your support.

Miss Musgrave, Mrs Bostock, Mrs Coombs and Mrs Barker
