Welcome to The Hurricane Class!

We have 27 wonderful students this year, with the support of fabulous, hard-working TAs throughout the week!  Mrs. Edmunds supports Hurricane Class every morning.  Miss Hill is with us Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday full day and Friday mornings (not Thursdays).  Mrs Godfrey supports Hurricane Class Thursday all day and Friday afternoon.  Mrs Williams supports The Hurricane Class Thursday afternoons.  Mrs Johnson will eventually be supporting us Tuesday afternoons.  We are so lucky to have SO much wonderful support!

I am sure there may be questions that will arise throughout the school year and I strongly believe in parent communication.  There is a parent communication book in front of my classroom that you may leave any comments or concerns in.  You may also speak to me first thing in the morning or after school, or email the office and they will forward your letter to me and I will respond as quickly as I can.  I will be happy to speak with you, as communication is key to your child's success.

I have high expectations for all students, with an "above and beyond" attitude.  I know you will be surprised by the growth you will notice in your child throughout the school year.  To create an exceptional student, it takes the home and the school.  Please be a part of your child's education as much as you can.  Ask questions about their day and what they learned in class (if they say nothing, they are lying!) :) Be a part of their homework assignments. Being involved is the best you can do!  Thank you for all of your support and I am so proud of your children!!  I love their hugs, smiles and brilliant attitude towards their school work.

Foraging, firelighting and fun!

We've had a fab couple of weeks out at Forest School with the Class 2 children really getting stuck in.

During the first week, the children had the chance to explore and see how the site had changed since they were last there.  They played on the new slackline, went pond dipping (and met one of our resident frogs), make a range of culinary delights in the mud kitchen and - generally - had fun!

We came together around the fire to cook and eat drop scones - which we served with freshly picked blackberries.

This week, lots of the children were keen to make bows and arrows.  They learned to identify willow by the colour of the branches and the leaves, and they cut some using loppers.  There was a lot of teamwork and problem solving with this activity.

Other children chose to build a den or have a go at getting a spark using a flint and steel.  Some also made leaf prints on flags, and we saw how the wind blew them.

Cooking and eating s'mores proved hugely popular!!

Phonics

Please have look at the phonics sounds sheet on our class page. This sheet contains all the sounds the children have been learning since foundation. You can help your child by getting them to say the sounds to you and by asking them to read words containing the different sounds. During the phonics screening check children will be asked to read a combination of real and alien words (nonsense words). This is to ensure they are using their phonics to decode words. It will be really helpful if you can ask your children to read a mixture of these words at home. For example, an alien word such as "sploon" would be spilt into the sounds s-p-l-oo-n. I have included a document that is a mixture of alien and real words that you can use for this.

Year 2 Spellings

Please have a look at the Year 2 spelling document to see how you can help your child at home.
